TERMS AND CONDITIONS

2013-2014 School Year

This agreement is for the purpose of running efficient and effective online classes. It is made between Veritas Press, Inc., aka Veritas Press Scholars Academy (“Veritas”), each individual student or his legal guardian (“Student”) and the parent(s) of each Student (“Parents”) and each person auditing a course or his legal guardian (“Auditor”). A teacher (“Teacher”) who will be an agent of Veritas for all matters related to each course will be assigned to teach, grade all work, and communicate Student’s progress with Parents.

  1. Parental Responsibility: Parents are expected to take primary responsibility for Student’s education, to supervise their academic work, and to assure that assignments are completed in required formats and by due dates. This includes monitoring of Student’s exams (as applicable) and proofreading any writing assignments before final submission.  Parents may delegate the task of proofreading as they deem prudent or necessary. Parents are expected to procure all required equipment and materials needed for each registered course.

  2. Email Contact: Parents are responsible to ensure that Internet accounts, computers, headset with microphone, and any additional peripherals needed for Parents and Student are working properly. Any changes to an email address should be reported to Veritas Press via e-mail to info@veritaspress.com at least two business days before the change is effective. It is important to include your full name whenever communicating by email.

  3. Due Dates: All assignments are due in the manner prescribed by the Teacher by midnight, Eastern Time, on the due date. Parents are encouraged to see that Student assignments are begun early enough to be completed before the due date allowing for unforeseen circumstances.

  4. Attendance and Make-Ups: Archives of missed classes are posted and must be viewed by absent students in a timely manner. Any graded material occurring during an excused absence will not be included in the grade average. Student is responsible for obtaining any notes or assignments from any class Student misses from another student or any bulletin board maintained by the Teacher. The class schedule is attached hereto as Appendix A. Absence from summer courses is more limited due to the condensed time frame of the course.

  5. Report Cards: All written assignments and quizzes will receive a grade by Teacher. There will also be a semester final. Progress Reports that do not contain grades will be issued at the end of the first and third quarters. A Report Card with grades will be issued at the end of the second quarter/first semester and fourth quarter/second semester. Grades and comments will be viewable by Parents  two (2) weeks following the end of each quarter and emailed to parents approximately four weeks after the end of the quarter/semester.

  6. Writing Assignment Standards: There is a specific format for all written assignments. Parents are expected to see that the Student follows this format. Appendix C explains the format requirements.

  7. Writing Quality: It is assumed that Student will have sufficient mastery of writing skills including grammar, vocabulary and expression commensurate with the level of the class. Parent expressly states that this is the case by registering Student.

  8. Classroom Etiquette & Behavior Standards: Appendix B provides the Classroom Etiquette and Behavior Standards. Students may be expelled without refund for inappropriate behavior in the classroom. The registering of a student is an affirmation that Parents and Student have read and agree with these standards.

  9. Fees:
    1. All tuition and fees must be paid prior to the beginning of class or paid timely according to another agreement. Failure to do so will likely result in the student being withheld access to the class until payment delinquencies are resolved.
    2. The tuition for online teacher-led courses for the current school year is found on the Veritas Press web page. A nonrefundable deposit is due at the time of registration. The course deposit holds a spot in the registered class and covers administrative costs associated with the registration process. The remaining balance is due on or before August 15th or the first work day thereafter. In the event that the final payment is not made timely the spot held for the student and the deposit will likely be forfeited without notice and given to another student, if any. Books and other required materials are in addition to the above course costs.
    3. Tuition for summer school online teacher-led courses is found on the Veritas Press web page. A nonrefundable deposit is due at the time of registration. The remainder is due on or before two weeks prior to the first day of class. Books and other required materials are in addition to the above course costs.
    4. The tuition for self-paced courses is found on the Veritas Press web page. The enrollment period for a self-paced course is one year from the start date which is typically the date of registration. There are occasional circumstances that will allow the start date to be delayed. In such delayed instances the enrollment period will be for one year from the agreed start date. The total cost is payable at the time of registration.

  10. Wait Lists help us determine when there is demand for more sections of a course at a particular meeting time. When demand is sufficient, we will open new sections to meet the needs of wait-listed students. Therefore, the same deposit to register for a secured seat is required to go on the wait list. Wait list deposits are nonrefundable unless:
    1. We are unable to offer a seat in the wait list section and do not offer another section of the course, on the same day and times by August 15th or, in the case of a summer class, two weeks prior to the start date.
    2. The student fails to meet any pre-requisites testing requirements (less a $25 testing fee).
    3. The student takes the same class from us during the same year at a different time or day.

  11. Withdrawals and Transfers: Students withdrawing prior to the beginning of the third week of class (prior to the second week for summer classes) are entitled to a full refund (not including the deposit). Late enrollees may also withdraw with a full refund (not including the deposit) within the first two weeks (one week for summer classes) from their enrollment date. No refunds are available if a withdrawal from a class occurs after the first two weeks. A 50% tuition credit per course is available for students that withdraw after the first two weeks and before the Thanksgiving break of that school year. The credit must be used on or before August 15th or the first work day thereafter of the next school year. A transfer fee of $15 will be charged to the credit card on file upon transferring a student to another course. Transfers may only be carried out before class starts and at the end of the first semester and may only be accomplished by calling 800-922-5082.  Refunds for Self-Paced courses are only available if the course has not been accessed. Any other condition will be considered on a case by case basis.

  12. Late Enrollment: Any student enrolling in a class after the class has met for two weeks will be considered to be a Late Enrollee. Details of payments, credit for the class, etc. vary based on the class. Details are available for any given situation by contacting Veritas Press directly at 800-922-5082 or info@veritaspress.com.

  13. Auditing Classes: Individuals who sign up to audit a class will pay a slightly reduced tuition including a nonrefundable deposit. No credit will be granted for courses that are taken by an auditor. Auditors may attend all classes but may not talk or interact with the other class members or the Teacher in any way during class. Auditors are not expected to complete any assignments nor will any student work be evaluated by the teacher.

  14. Registration: Parents may register by using the online registration form or by calling Veritas Press and registering over the telephone.

  15. Cancellations or Changes to Classes: Class offerings and teachers are subject to change without notice. When cancellations or changes are made registered students may be transferred to a different section if seats are available or any deposit and paid tuition will be refunded upon withdrawal from the course within 30 days of the cancellation or change notification.

  16. Statement of Faith: Parents, Student, and Auditors understand that teaching will be consistent with the Statement of Faith and Philosophy attached hereto as Appendix D and explicitly consent to their children being taught accordingly.

Appendix D

Statement of Faith and Philosophy
Veritas Press Scholars Academy

We believe that the sixty-six books of the Holy Bible are the only authoritative, inerrant Word of God.  Further, we believe that these Scriptures are our final rule in all matters of faith and practice.

We believe that there is but one God, eternally existent in three Persons, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

We believe that Adam, the first man, sinned in his disobedience toward God and that through his disobedience sin extended to all his posterity.  Consequently, all are born sinners, spiritually dead and relationally separated from God.

We believe that because of the ineffable love of God for the world, Jesus Christ, born of the Virgin Mary, perfect Man and truly God, came to earth to fulfill the divine Law through perfect obedience.  Having lived a sinless life in obedience to His Father, He gave His life on the Cross as the perfect, complete sacrifice for sin.  On the third day, God raised Him from the dead, after He had provided a full redemption for His chosen people-those for whom He died.  We believe that God will regenerate all for whom Christ died through the invincible power of the Holy Spirit.  We believe that we sinners appropriate this work of God's salvation by His grace alone through our faith alone, not as a result of any of our works.

We believe that a true church may be known by its engaging in the pure preaching of the Gospel, the right administration of the sacraments, and the faithful exercising of church discipline.  We believe that all Christians will seek to unite in fellowship with such a church.

We believe in the resurrection both of the believer and of the unbeliever-the believer unto the resurrection of everlasting life and the unbeliever unto the resurrection of everlasting damnation.

We believe and embrace the system of doctrine expressed in the early ecumenical creeds of the Church (the Apostles', the Nicene, the Chalcedonian and the Athanasian) and the confessions of faith issuing from the Protestant Reformation, including the Belgic Confession of Faith, the Heidelberg Catechism, The Philadelphia Confession, the Thirty-nine Articles of the Church of England, and the Westminster Confession of Faith. Where these documents are in conflict we submit to the Westminster Confession of Faith with the understanding that such conflicts should be articulated carefully as if they are secondary doctrines and taught with balance and integrity recognizing that these differences should not cause a breach in fellowship.

We believe our role as educators to be in loco parentis, (in the place of the parent).  We believe that parents are responsible to educate their children in the Lord.  We believe that educators must be the delegates of the parents, assisting them in the education of their children, but never usurping their God-given parental prerogative and responsibility.

We believe that biblical discipline, the encouragement of an obedient child and the correction of a disobedient child, is a critical and necessary part of education.  Under no circumstances will the misbehavior of one child be permitted continually to hinder the education of other children.

We believe that fathers are the God-ordained heads of their households.  Wherever possible, we desire that each father assume leadership in the education of his children.

We believe that conflict resolution should be accomplished as quickly and as simply as possible.  Concerns and grievances should first be addressed directly to the party involved, in order that justice and charity be duly served.

We employ the time-proven method of the Trivium in the education of the student.  This method includes three stages.  The Grammar stage studies the fundamentals of disciplines in order to build a framework of knowledge on which later information can be hung.  Questions of who, what, where and when are the focus.  The Dialectic stage brings the grammar of disciplines into ordered relationships.  The goal is to equip students with the thinking skills necessary to recognize sound arguments and ideas and to detect and correct fallacious ones.  This stage addresses the questions of how and why.  The Rhetoric stage seeks to produce students who can use language, both written and spoken, to express their thoughts eloquently and persuasively.  The goal of the Trivium is to educate students not in what to think, primarily, but in how to think, thoroughly, maturely and biblically.
