State of the Union?
by Marlin Detweiler

One of my staff asked me to write a State of the Union article to lead off the year. I asked him if he meant Veritas Press or the United States. He replied, “Veritas Press; U.S. is too depressing.” I must say it is with great fear and a gloomy outlook that I watch the news out of Washington these days.

Yet there is hope. I recently heard a sermon that addressed the State of the Union that really hit me. Can you imagine the defeat and resignation of Jesus’ disciples as they watched Him being taken down from the cross and laid in a grave?

Family Goals

“Where there is no vision, the people perish . . .” (Proverbs 29:18)

It's been said that most people spend more time planning a weekend getaway than they do planning their lives. I believe, too often, the same can be said for our families.

The result is that we get busier and busier, but with each passing year, we don't seem to be achieving the things we really want to as a family, and we don't grow together spiritually as we desire.

Grand Prize Essay

The Craziest New Year’s Eve Ever
by Kelly Jarboe

What a crazy idea. What an awful, ridiculous, insane, poorly planned idea.” These were the thoughts rushing through Molly’s head as she boarded a flight from Topeka, Kansas, to New York City, New York. Since it was just two days until the New Year, the airport was over-crowded and cramped. If it was up to Molly, she would never be in this situation. The only reason she was here was because her older sister, Josie, had the absurd idea to get married in Times Square right at January 1st on the stroke of midnight.
