You CAN Teach an Old Dog New Tricks
by Rob Shearer
I’ve been teaching in the classroom for over 30 years, but this year has been something new for me—connecting with students in a virtual classroom. I’m about halfway through my rookie year as an online instructor with Veritas Press Scholars Academy, and I’ve already learned more than I thought I would—and like the online classroom far more than I anticipated.

Family Game Night
For many homeschool families, the January and February months need a little motivation. The days are shorter, the weather is colder, and what started an educational journey feels like an ongoing checklist. It is during these cold, windy evenings that my husband builds a fire, and we crack out the puzzles and board games. Off go our cellphones, iPads, and laptops for the evening. We open a cardboard box and unfold—not download—a board game. It’s in these moments that I feel our family really connect. Not only that, we are exercising our brains and interacting with people face-to-face.

50% Off My Favorite Songs!
A year ago our dear friend, Maria Von Trapp, stepped from this life into eternity, just short of her 100th birthday. To celebrate her life, we are offering the book that she asked us to publish for her, My Favorite Songs, at a reduced price of $9.98 (50% discount!) with a $75 purchase for the month of February. Just be sure to ask for it in the comments box of your online order, or verbally on the phone!
My Favorite Songs is a compilation of a lifetime of original folk songs composed by Maria, as well as many candid family photographs and original artwork by her grandniece. In addition there is enclosed in the book a CD that features her grandnieces and grandnephews singing these arrangements.
Our hearts go out to her son, Kikuli Mwanukuzi, whom she adopted while serving the Lord as a missionary in Papua New Guinea, and to her many other surviving family members. We hope that you will enjoy this piece of history passed on to us by such a lovely lady!
We were honored to have Maria as our Keynote speaker at the Teacher’s Training Conference here in Lancaster, PA, some years ago. Time spent with her is a treasured memory, as were our visits in her home in Stowe, VT.
Q. I don’t feel like my seventh grader is ready for the content of Omnibus I. Is there another level you recommend starting with?
