A Veritas Education
by Marlin Detweiler
I can remember, as if it was yesterday, my wife lying in the hospital bed after having our first son, saying, “I need to call Lake Highland to get him on the waiting list.” You see, where we lived there was a particular school that, if you cared about your child’s education, you wanted them to attend. But you could not pay a deposit and enroll them until they were born. We looked at this sweet bundle and wanted what was best for him. Little did we know what was in store for us in a few short years. We brought this baby boy home, nurtured him, taught him about His heavenly Father and about the world around him. Then that long-awaited day came when he turned five and we took him for the first time to the school that we had wanted for him so much. We walked in holding back the tears and thinking, “Are we sure about this?”—the kind of tears that every parent seems to have when they realize they are turning their own flesh and blood over to another to shape and mold.
It’s that time of year again – when we take time to celebrate our tireless mothers and the tremendous influence they have in our lives. HERE is a downloadable Mother’s Day card to make for your mother. Or, if you are the mother, consider giving this epistula to Dad. (Some time with Dad helping the kids make cards for Mom creates fun memories and an opportunity for a great life lesson in showing appreciation.)
End-of-Year Gathering Highlights
For some, the End-of-Year Gathering, or EOYG as VP veterans like to call it, is the highlight of the school year. Filled with trips, dinners, luncheons, entertainment, and graduation, it’s much of the VPSA social life packed into one long weekend. For those of you who haven’t attended EOYG before, check out what seasoned attendees have to say about three of their favorite events.

Q. I noticed that you require placement tests for some of your online courses. I haven't used the same math curriculum, for instance, so how can I best prepare my child for the test so he can enroll in your course next year?
A. Our goal with the placement test is to provide each parent with the best information for success in our program. Veritas offers students a rigorous course of systematic study that students can enter at various stages of the process. We recommend that you finish the math you are doing. After you register for a class, Veritas will contact you if a placement test is required. If a test is taken, we will evaluate the results with you in order to create as successful an experience as possible.
