Athletics is a form of hard work that we have seen aid in the training of young people toward a life of faithfulness, discipline, and accomplishment. We are happy to have Brent Harkin writing on the Summer Olympics in our lead article. Brent was an Olympic hopeful in the high jump and serves as a classical school administrator.
Gymnasia and a Classical Chrisitan Education
by Brent Harken
Many of us are in the throes of the Olympic frenzy. The Olympic Games in London are upon us. The Olympics date back to the eighth century BC. Its ideals represented a key leg to what the Greeks believed was a complete education. The Greeks and particularly the Athenians viewed sport, or as they termed it, gymnasia, to be integral to education and the development of a complete Greek citizen. In other words, gymnasia played a fundamental role in a Classical Education.
Over the summer children tend to turn off their brains to academics and focus on play. Gone, but not forgotten, are the multiplication tables, the Bible chronologies and the Latin vocab exercises. It’s almost as if a light bulb has been switched off in one part of their brain, and come September that light bulb will turn back on—slowly but surely.

Q. I have a sixth grader who has completed all three Latin for Children books. What do I do with him this fall? I’m not sure he is ready for Wheelock’s; or maybe it’s me who is not ready!
Summer Reading Contest
There is still plenty of time to join us in our summer reading contest. We look forward to September to see how excited the children are about their reading and cashing in gift certificates for books of their choosing. Please encourage your children to be a part of the contest this summer.
