Finding Teachable Moments
by Josie Lowery
I remember when my children were young, and I had just finished reading a book on parenting which encouraged the use of “teachable moments” in everyday life. The author went into great detail telling me how I could use all sorts of everyday experiences to teach my children all sorts of things: learning fractions while cooking, counting money when grocery shopping, and showing them life lessons gleaned from current events. Armed with my newfound perspective on how to create life-long learners, I began one day in the flowerbed outside my dining room window.
It’s hard to believe it’s August already! While some of you are already in school mode, others may be kicking themselves for not making that trip to an important historical site to keep your minds stimulated. Well, don’t worry, there’s still a month left to awaken those sun-fried brains. I was blessed to be able to travel with my husband as he filmed for Omnibus self-paced. We visited many sites for Omnibus I – III that I had never seen before. But if you don’t have time to plan a trip, here’s a list of fun travel videos and recipes to bring the trip to you. (Inspired by our Omnibus self-paced trip.)

Long ago, there was no sun,
No birds no trees, not anyone,
Just three who lived eternally,
Fully content without you or me,
But the father then said: ‘let us go and create,’
They made a planet, and boy was it great,
Do you have a "distracted child"?
This month, we're offering you a free downloadable audio mp3 recording of The Distracted Child - a presentation that Veritas Press co-founder Laurie Detweiler made at the Association of Classical & Christian Schools Annual Conference.

Q. What do the History Transition Guides 1 and 2 cover, and how do I use them at home?
A. The History Transition Guides, which we expect to release sometime in September, are intended to be used with Pages of History Volumes 1 and 2. History Transition Guide Volume 1 covers events from Creation to the Reformation (Veritas Press history cards OTAE 1 through MARR 32) and the Pages of History: Secrets of the Ancients. History Transition Guide Volume 2 covers events from the Reformation to Present (history cards Explorers-1815 1 through 1815-Present 32) and Pages of History: Blazing New Trails. Both books, guides, history cards and corresponding historical literature are meant to be used in one academic year for our History Survey & Transition class.
