What I Wish They'd Told Me

I have a master’s degree in philosophy and a Ph.D. in genetics. My adult life has been spent in genetics labs working on cutting-edge research or in the classroom discussing the great ideas. Whatever the task, it was always done in exclusively adult environments with very demanding expectations. Now I am at home, homeschooling my three little boys, the oldest of which just turned eight. I wasn’t exactly prepared for this. But my surprise is of a very specific kind.

New Year's Reflections and Goals

They grow up so fast.”

As a parent, you’ve probably heard these clichés more times than you can count. You may have even repeated them to younger parents, because, whether we like it or not, it’s true. My two-year-old daughter thinks I am the coolest person in the world. She wants to do her hair like me, dress like me and put on make-up like I do. Flash forward ten years and she might not even want to be seen with me in public.

Dreaming of the Present

Emily Dickinson once wrote the famous line, “Forever is composed of nows.”  While many nod politely and respectfully at this quote, how many people truly ponder its meaning?  Urging us to see value in each moment, Dickinson prods readers to also notice the fleeting manner of life.  She encourages us to prepare for the looming future, but also to find joy in the present.  A scholar always reaching towards new goals, I struggled with the idea of keeping my feet firm in the present as I looked to my future...
